Galaxy Zoo Forum downtime
If you’re a regular user of the forum at http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/ you’ll notice that it’s currently offline. There’s been a sizeable server outage which has affected it (along with many other websites), and we hope it will be back up soon – but this outage is out of our control. We were actually already planning to transfer it to a new server anyway, and we were hoping to do this on Tuesday, although this downtime may unfortunately get in the way of our plans. If the forum does come back up in time, we may take it down for Tuesday in order to make this transfer, but it should be back up shortly after that. Please bear with us until we can get everything back up and running properly, we’re running around in our t-shirts and underpants to get this going!
Update: Forum is still down unfortunately, but the support staff at the hosting site are working hard to bring it back up. It looks like the transfer will be delayed – and hopefully we’ll be able to give some warning of any resulting downtime from that.
Update 2: (Wednesday morning) Unfortunately there’s been hardware issues as the support technicians tried to bring the server back up. They’re still working on bringing it back up – no estimate for when this will take place I’m afraid.
Update 3: (Thursday morning) We’re in the process of trying to reinstall the forum framework and content back on the original server. A temporary forum is in place. It is not organised in the same way and has a different theme to emphasise this fact, and no posts there will be retained (except maybe in rare cases).
Update 4: (Wednesday morning – 11th June) The disk holding the forum is with a data recovery team, but unfortunately they won’t be able to get anything off for approximately another week at the earliest.
Thanks, Edd. I figured it was something like that. I almost wrote to you yesterday, but then I thought you probably have enough on your hands. Might I just add that I really, really don’t like this server. 😉
Sure! And thanks for thinking about us addicts. 😉
Anyone want to set up a spare blog in the meantime . . . ? 😉
A spare blog? This one isn’t good enough? 😉
Do you mean spare “forum”, Alice. Looks like we’ve started one. ;D
I can’t believe that I’m going crazy just because the forum is down.
Question: Is the forum on a separate server than the rest of Galaxy Zoo?
Question: How much of danger is there of information loss, if any, in the forum because of the outage?
My stats website (www.statcounter.com) has also been down, for the same reason. I also had two attacks from Trojans and some unwanted e-mails, from ‘people’ who seen my profile – Galaxy Zoom profile?
That’s Galaxy Zoo profile.
I guess I’ll have to spend my time at DNA-Zoo.org
I mean like a spare Cafe. Surely you don’t want that kettle and the guess-that-object-and-tune threads taking over this one . . .
Just to cope with withdrawal symptoms . . . 😉
Ah, poor Alice…
Watching MotorGP on BBC2 yesterday, there were banners over the track saying ‘Alice, Alice, Alice, Alice, Alice’.
Oh well. Good luck with the transfer. I hope it goes smoothly for you. I’ll see you all soon. (I hope)
Maybe Waveney could build one, Alice. 😉
I wonder if Galaxy Zoo forum withdrawal can be fatal. LOL 😉
Well Alice, how about some tea then? ;D
Oh dear, here we go . . . 😀
See…at least you have tea, Alice… 🙂
Anyway have a look at APOD, looks like some white stuff there, under the Lander.
Well, you said the magic word first… 😎 :p
Here is some more info on the server problems:
“This evening at 4:55pm CDT in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room. Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost.
We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage. Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department.
This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Rest assured we are working around the clock.”
The service guys are still repairing/powering on machines as we speak!
http://service-update.theplanet.com/
I’m just curious about something. 8Þ
:Þ
Who’s going to be the first to ask “What’s everyone having for dinner?”?
Erm… you? :p btw, the smilies are not the same here as on the forum… ah well… Truste! :-* 😀 😉
What does it mean ‘Your comment is awaiting moderation’? – Am I going to be deleted?
Anyone want some lemon meringue pie? 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
Lemon Meringue Pie?!
Oh, YES!
The forum was down over the keekend, down tomorrow to
change servers, I’ll be busy Weds thru Sat, don’t know how
much time I’ll have to stop by the new and improved
server location of the forum. Happy Birthday to everyone
that’s having one. Like MacArther “I shall return.”
I want chocolate! Lot and lots of chocolate! 😀
The thing is though, if this server is up and running they will not be able to make the transition to the new server. And the way things look right now, that’s probably not going to happen.
I don’t think we would feel so helpless if we knew exactly what was going on. It’s curious, because we still have access to Galaxy Analysis and the databases, but without our little forum to exchange our thoughts we feel cutoff. And, even though many of us have never met each other in person, still we have ties to each other, and we really do belong to a community. Not that I don’t have other things to do in my life, but I am really feeling a real sense of loss and a certain amount of anxiety. And, I really cannot explain it. I guess Galaxy Zoo has become more of a part of me than I realized and everyday that the forum is down I feel like something essential is missing from my life. Even my wife has noticed a difference in me since the forum went down. She said that I’ve been more irritable in the last two days. I just need to talk about galaxies with like minded people. I guess I really am a junkie! Oh no! LOL 😀
I meant if the server ISN’T up and running by Tuesday they will not be able to switch servers. Sorry for the typo. 😦
P.S. I think the smilies are cuter here than in the forum. LOL 😀 😉
On a brighter note, at least I’ve had a chance to read some of the blogs. Looks like Chris is having a good time at the AAS conference in St. Louis. I really wish I could have made it to the conference. There just wasn’t enough advanced notice. Hopefully, next time. 😉
I was wondering what was happening. Oh well good luck with the transfer. It feels good being 21.
Oh my!! Hope it works out ok. Miss everyone. talk at you all later then.
Welcome to the new “Just chat” thread in the new “Cafe” sticky in the new makeshift forum. 😀
Hi guys, as you can see, this outage has hit not just Galaxy Zoo, but other sites as well. Let’s hope this is resolved soon!
Good morning! 😉 So, an update? Can you move it today or did it still not came back?
‘Is the forum on a separate server than the rest of Galaxy Zoo?’
Yes
‘How much of danger is there of information loss, if any, in the forum because of the outage?’
All the data should be safe, as far as I know.
It was carried off by a tornado, Hanny…the entire server I mean. I’m afraid the forum is gone forever. 😦 LOL J/K 😀
It’s still down, which means they will not be able to move it. 😦
Well it’s still not up, so it’s not looking good for a move today.
Hey, sorry, JohnF and EricFDiaz – your comments didn’t appear until today. JohnF – I’ll write to you about concealing your e-mail address, the option’s on your profile. And Eric, I feel lost too – how scary that withdrawal symptoms actually cause visible moood changes!! That’s something to write about for our Galaxyzooitis reports.
Happy birthday Stealth Raptor!
And “your comment is awaiting moderation” happens the first time everyone who posts here. After your first post has been checked, you should be fine. I don’t think you’re going to be deleted somehow. Especially not if you keep inviting us to awesome RAS stuff . . . just kidding.
Grrrrrr – I’d really hoped that at least its reason for being down today would be that it was being moved. They said they expected to have it up again by Sunday afternoon! So I guess the damage was a lot more extensive than thought!
Msn is also down, so I’m going to turn this computer off and on again.
And if you want to know how my life’s going, I’m ill, which really annoys me. 😦
I am polishing the blue early-types paper…. 😉
Go Kevin! 😀 😀 😀
For those of you feeling helpless, people keep writing to me to send me this:
Houston, TX (AHN) — An explosion Saturday evening at a Texas-based,
privately held server hosting provider has caused server outages
effecting 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers.
According to The Planet’s website, at about 5 p.m. Saturday electrical
gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three
walls surrounding their electrical equipment room.
No injuries were reported and no servers were damaged or lost.
The Houston company, which provides servers for small and medium sized
companies, said it has its entire support team working around the clock
to get the servers back on line.
Don’t know if that’s us, but if it is, it would explain a lot. Thanks to everyone for letting me know.
I’m not sure that that’s us either, but let’s at least be happy nobody got injured!
For those of you who miss the Cafe and would really like a laugh, you can tell Chris should come to the Cafe too sometimes. See this post: http://chrislintott.net/2008/06/02/aas-day-1/
I agree, Eric, he sounds like he’s having a lovely time. Sorry to hear you couldn’t make it. Here’s to the next one!
Don’t forget to go on Astronomy Picture of the Day, people. It’s something to do, anyway: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html
And if you’re feeling miserable without asteroids, there’s always this: http://www.play.vg/games/4-Asteroids.html
(Admin – if you want to remove that link I have no problem with that – it’s a link to an ancient 90s games site, but Asteroids was wonderful and I have the feeling a lot of zooites would find it fun . . . nothing dodgy on that site that I have encountered!)
Hey, my last comment never appeared. Have we run out of room?
Odd?? Let me check in the moderation queue…
Nope, seems fine… give it a minute?
Oh, I expect I pressed the wrong button or tried to submit it in the wrong tab or something! 😀 Never mind, it was quite a silly one, just some recommendations of what to do while we’re bored . . .
Well here they are again . . .
If anyone misses asteroids too desperately I found an ancient game about them: http://www.play.vg/games/4-Asteroids.html. (Feel free to remove this bit if you like, Kevin or anyone else. I’ve been through the site and I don’t think it’s dodgy but even so.)
And http://www.chrislintott.net is a good read – although Chris should come to the cafe more often to talk about food with us. Sorry you couldn’t make it, Eric. Here’s to next one, eh? It sounds like a great trip Chris is having. Keep us posted, Chris!
And don’t forget to keep checking Astronomy Picture of the Day! http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html
OK, I just rewrote it, and that one never appeared either. Please remove the first one if both appear later! (galaxy zoo blushing icon!)
Hey, there are indeed more messages today here then there were yesterday (I mean in between, very strange). Anyway, I knew about the crash, but I was wondering if it was still down because of the move or that it never came back. I get a different error now, so maybe that’s good news. Anyway, hope to see you all soon! 😉
Hi Hanny, that’s because people posted, but if it was their first post, a mod had to approve them. Once approved, all their posts appeared.
Oh well, now I know about this place. I think we have time for tea, whilst they fix the problem. Kettle’s on 🙂
Hi infinity!
Hey Kevin, I have done so much more work with the forum offline! but of course I miss it infinitely 🙂
Thanks Kevin! 😉 And me too Infie!
Kevin, don’t forget to use me as a proofreader for your blue elliptical paper if you want to. In Paper No. 3, somebody wrote “there” when they meant “their”! 😀 We all want the highest possible standards, don’t we? 😀
(I keep saying this . . .)
I wonder how many comments we’ll have here by the time the forum is up and running again? 😉
Who knows, but I fell like a newbie again 🙂
I was away for most of the weekend and didn’t understand the gravity of the situation until this morning. Heart felt sympathies to you all , in particular to Eric and Alice.
That was some explosion! I read that the tested generator supplies up to 2 megawatts for 900 plus servers!
Could be a long job if Texan health and safety regulations are similar to those here in the UK.
Meanwhile I’ll carry on classifying mergers lol.
It could indeed be a long job. There’s an audio broadcast from the CEO of the planet company here-
[audio src="http://service-update.theplanet.com/Erwin-msg6-2-08.wav" /]
with copious praise for the 80 or more stalwarts, several of whom he quotes, who are acting beyond the call of duty to bring our servers home.
It sounds reminiscent of the Apollo 13 disaster but this one blew out four walls. Forgive my sarcasm- but the CEO’s tale is a magnificent example of embellishment of
Explosion injures 800 servers. Many feared killed.
Rescue attempt continues, further news expected hourly.
The server’s not quite on its feet yet. We’ve also redirected the DNS to the new server although that change will take some time to propagate. You may soon find you get a nice message telling you the forum is offline rather than your browser complaining though, and hopefully we’ll get the move to the new server done ASAP.
Right, now it says “FORBIDDEN” instead of ‘something wrong with the server’, very NICE! :p But as long as you say it’s promissing, it’s probably fine… 😉
Thanks to Hanny for helping me do some preliminary debugging I’d not been able to test until now.
Yay Edd, I have no idea how you just did that, but this new message is indeed nice and promising and all! 😀
Oh right, just seen your message, erm… well, my pleasure (she said having no idea what it was she’d done then except for clicking on some things… :p)
Hey and Edd, I think your post is now the one with the most replies! 😀
I listened to the recording made by the CEO of the Planet that was provided by Graham, and all I can say is that I am grateful that no one was injured or killed in what sounds like a catastrophic electrical explosion. Thank goodness for the one young man who was late doing his rounds because he was waiting on a customer. Equipment can be replaced. A human life cannot.
I would say that 68 replies, including this one, puts Edd’s post over the top! 😀
Well now Alice has lost her internet access and so sends her love… well at least the mobile’s still working!
I’m pleased to hear that Kevin is putting the final touches on the blue early-types paper. That deserves a big grin. : D I’ve been looking forward to reading that paper for quite some time. 😉
Big grin===> 😀
LOL! 66 comments!
Well that was some server outage. What a headache to repair and salvage. Only just found this blog entry – and i’m sure I checked yesterday….. It seems logging on to the forum has become a regular part of all our lives and we’re all missing it. (Eric – take a deep breath…..and relax…… there – feel better?)
So “Hi” to everbody. Good luck to teh techies and meanwhile min’e with minl adn no sugar!!
And – does everyone else have smilies to press on the blog? I don’t :0(
Poor Alice 😦
She just has the worst luck with her ISP.
And that should have read mine’s with milk and no sugar….Must read before pressing “send”.
Yes, thanks, Jules….much better. 😉
Alice back online, Hi Jules 🙂
Hello everyone, Internet connection back all of a sudden, and excuse the two long posts earlier with the silly links which it took the blog a while to post!
When I find a proper job and my own place to live I will be the one choosing an Internet connection, and I will be very picky indeed! 😀
Welcome back, Alice! 🙂
Thanks! :-* (Let’s see if the Galaxy Zoo Kissing Smiley works . . .)
Smilies: I’ll show you the ones I’ve found – adding spaces:
: )
; )
: D
: o
And I much prefer the cute Zoo ones. 😛
(Let’s see if that works, too!)
Yuck. A smiley with a red mouth. And the kiss one doesn’t work. What about without the hyphen . . . :*
Nope 😦
(I will now go stand in the corner and apologise for cluttering up the blog)
Hi Inf – so where are people finding the smilies? I assume they are external to the blog. Curious.
They’re automatic, Jules. (I know my name isn’t Inf but never mind. ;)) There is also : (
Hmmm…Ok….is it just me? I see the occasional proper yellow smiley but most appear as ordinary text smilies. 😦
Yay! Where did that come from???
Goes off to practice…
Sorry everybody! 🙂 🙂
http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Smilies#What_Text_Do_I_Type_to_Make_Smileys.3F
Morning Pluk 😀 🙂 😆
morning 😉
8)
Oh brother! rolleyes 🙄 😀 😉
Now this is a fine to-do! I go away for a little while (both my PC & I caught viruses – or should that be virii?) & when we come back there’s no Forum to come back to! Well a big hello to everyone anyway… 🙂
p.s. …at least here you will be spared my animated gifs…
😉
LOL 😆 Hi Adam!
Re Pluk’s smileys – not entirely sure about the significance of Mr Green by the way….
Viruses. Not virii 🙂 Pet peeve of mine
Speaking of unusual plurals (fish and sheep being the obvious), here is a quote from the brilliant Tom Lehrer:
“Some of us used to wander over to the… I believe it was called the . . . *stadium*, to see if anything might be going on over there. – And one did come to realize that the football fight songs that one hears in comparable . . . *stadia* . . . have a tendency to be somewhat uncouth . . .”
Missing the Zoo. It’s quite disturbing to reflect upon the cumulative emotional attachment to it, if you add up all these citizen scientists . . . Here’s to the people working on mending the server, and the Cafe’s safe return!
Some Information on the explosion at the Planet Data Centre.
An example of how not to implement a Data Storage system –
http://blog.statcounter.com/?p=91
It might be an idea to move the Galaxy Zoo Servers elsewhere.
neither am I Jules, just the biggest grin available 😉
I would hate to throw an emoticon into the works but does anyone know how much power it takes to maintain a rapidly expanding archive?
For instance, were one to select some random historical date, only several months distant, for some certain thread, one would expect to trawl through many necessary images that consume gigabytes of data.
Interspaced of course, there would be myriads of emoticons 😉 and short blog responses such as “good morning” or even “morning” , “enjoy your coffee” or “stone me the sun has arisen again”.
Somewhere some server presumably mindlessly stores these blog responses, a watt here, an extra watt there, endless watts to blogclutter the web.
Somewhere we misled the gravity of the situation. It was actually 9000 servers that were denied power. Globally, many of us had been connected to the second floor of a single office block, through a single mighty conduit that takes or tried to take 2 megawatts of power. Had the building burnt down the servers would have been frazzled and those precious archives of clutter lost forever. Why wasn’t there backup at several locations? Why put the all the eggs in one basket? Economics no doubt. How many servers operate globally?
Where’s the server that archives these numerous responses to Edd’s original notification? What is the annual consumption of power to maintain this blog and the forum? I ‘d like to hear that these emoticons are powered by renewable energy. 2 megawatts is one large wind turbine output, assuming the wind blows which is about once every five days at my locale. I feel a twinge of shame about my own blog clutter.
I remember there was somebody on the forum whose avatar was a video of a walking penguin or something, and he posted bouncing blue smilies. If anyone can find that post I’d love to see them again and filch them for msn . . .
Graham, your post didn’t show up until I’d posted mine. Good point . . . I have no idea what the answers are and it’s so easy to forget things like that. Anyone know? Is this something we should be worrying about?
The server this is on and the forums are moving to is largely my responsibility. It has reasonable backup policies – it won’t survive a major fire or something but the data isn’t worth the expense of regular offsite backup policies.
The power it takes? Negligible overhead over the other roles the machine in question has. Text takes very little space. Most of the commenters’ mp3 collections will individually be far larger than the space taken by the forum and blog combined.
If you want to try to be efficient go ahead, but the place to start trying to be efficient is on processor and storage intensive content. Which blog and forum comments are not.
That’s actually good to know Edd. Would hate to be guilty of irresponsibly using resources.
A relief to me, too. I’d love to travel, but besides the cost is the CO2. We have to feel guilty for eating, drinking, shopping (not that I like shopping but . . .), using transport . . . please don’t let us have to worry about how to talk to each other in a guilt-free way, too!
Let’s face it, if it wasn’t for people we wouldn’t be finding out all the science anyway. If idiotic chat helps make the world go round, I’m fine with that. 🙂
I recollect that there was an unautographed blog reference, somewhere some time ago, to a worried guy called Malthus who predicted that while servers would populate according to a geometric progression, the energy sources that fed them would grow only arithmetically.
Many thought he was nuts 😦
Eventually he predicted that they or their food sources would frazzle leaving an impoverished few servers surviving in caves with immediate access to flowing brooks viz http://www.otherpower.com and spare copper wire, wheel hub discs and hieroglyph dictionaries.
Finally, beyond redemption, he predicted that world temperatures would rise- but hell copper has a high melting point, so what to the extra watt. He’s rumoured to be still out there, somewhere. I visit a lot of caves in windy mountainess areas, in proximity to shady glens, verdant pastures and vibrant brooks, always asking if anyone has seen him, many an hermit’s occasional tale of desertification but alas no hint of Malthus anywhere.
The morale I guess is always to sign and date(autograph) your blog.
Graham 03 June 2008
JohnF is trying to post, but his posts aren’t showing. I bet this blog is playing a trick on him and it will show later, just like with my two long posts with the silly links I posted earlier (anything to embarrass the mod, eh, computer?). However, not wanting to leave our RAS friend out, here is JohnF’s intended post:
“Some information on the explosion at the Planet Data Centre.
An example of how not to implement a Data Storage system –
http://blog.statcounter.com/?p=91”
Now let’s go see what that might be . . .
I thought they handled the disaster pretty well. Think about the numbers involved, 9000 servers. If one takes 5 mins to boot that’s 750 hours just in boots time and that’s if they all come up cleanly.
Replacing the power systems to run 9000 servers and their air-conditioning is not trivial, generators don’t grow on trees, especially on a Saturday night/Sunday morning 🙂
That was an interesting read Alice =[ ,that has really opened the eyes of the big users.
I accept that written text requires minimal data storage but there’s a lot of negligible stuff that grows geometrically, but it ignores server mass and numerosity that has to be manufactured and recycled in plastic bags. Servers, their longevity and data storage efficiency do improve with time, namely that it better equips them for survival, but that ancient blogger did acknowledge it at the time. Alfred Wallace referred to it in passing in his Letter from Ternate
http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/wallace/S043.htm
Ten pages or so that changed the world.
Server population, regardless of the magnitude of data storage, will grow according to the magnitude and sustainability of its energy sources. As Wallace said ” a sustainable population is a miserable population; an unending struggle to barely satiate its hunger”. The struggle for existence; hard is the lesson to live, easier the lesson how to die.
My fear is that
http://www.theplanet.com/
may not survive and we all bare some guilt that lame prose cannot hide, nor the 300watt my hardware consumes while I write.
I’ll switch off now to save power. No offence intended Alice; write on- I” watch TV a while.
Goodnight
from Edd Update: Forum is still down unfortunately, …[/qoute]
Hi Edd – Any chance of dating your updates ?
Hi everybodies !!
FB
Hello Fermats Brother! Btw did I tell you I was looking up Fermats Brother on the Internet? 🙂
Anyone else still awake?
Anyone got the kettle on? 😀 ???
Hello everyone. Sorry I haven’t been on in a while, exams are looming!!!
In other news, and because I want to show off (Sorries) its a new picture of me, that I think looks good:
http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff296/welshwrangler/Fortress%20Wales%202008/?action=view¤t=IMG_2806a.jpg
Hi Edd,
Is the old server up and running, and have you started transferring the forum data to the new server? Sorry for my impatience.
😆 :8):
Eric
8)
ok everyone take a chill pill!!! They are working on it, I am sure. Just remember you all had a life before galaxy zoo……….. Miss talking or what ever with all of you. See you on the flip side.
I already took a chill pill. In fact, I took three! They didn’t work! If the forum isn’t going to be up until let’s say Sunday, then I wish someone would say so. Then I wouldn’t feel the need to keep coming back here to see what’s going on.
The forum is more than just a place to hang out and socialize. It’s also a place where a lot of teaching and learning is done. And, some of us have ongoing projects that we’re working on that are important to us. And, now all of a sudden we are cut off from our work without any idea when we will have access to it. I’m sorry, but that is extremely frustrating. 😐
😀 a chill pill! LOL Liz!
It will get done when it get’s done. Preferably soon, but it doesnt sound like it will be backup soon. Oh well, this is a fun temporary forum anyway. 8)
Nice image on APOD today of Discovery chasing the ISS. Roll over the image to identify what’s what…

Oh and good morning to all who have found this temporary cafe 🙂
So this is where you all are. Greetings. 😀

Thanks for today’s update, Edd. 😉
I’ve just been let go from my current temping job as everyone is coming back from their holidays tomorrow. I thought I’d got it until the end of this week at least. I am going to sulk, and probably intend to go walking in Cornwall tomorrow and then find it’s pouring with rain and/or get up too late.
I want a fancy coffee or something. 😦 😦 😦
Hey . . . you know one thing I really miss?
Warning: while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.
Really.
Evening all. 😉 Still here then? Oh well – little we can do but wait for news. I can see it must be extra frustrating for you if you had work to do via the forum threads Eric – anything exciting?
Hope a new job comes your way soon Alice… 🙂
That’s not good news about your job 😦
Here’s some coffee (although it might not work without some fixed fonts)
((

Ahhh, stripped of my spaces!
evening all
Hi everyone. Hey, I think I can picture what you were trying to do with the coffee, sysboy. Tee hee hee. 😀 😀 😀
Having an argument with our kitchen light at the moment, it seems to think it’s running a disco . . .
What is it with you and lights? 💡
Didn’t you have a similar problem in your old house?
You could always stick to standard candles…
Heheh 😀 I think wherever I go, disaster strikes – or maybe it’s part of the package for the kind of rent I can pay!
Anyway, the landlord has agreed to come and look at it!
How’s everyone’s evening? This just isn’t a substitute for the Cafe. 😦 So I think I ought to put some jokes up or something.
“Doctor, doctor, I’ve got a ringing in my ears.”
“Don’t answer!”
“Doctor, doctor, I’ve hurt my arm in several places.”
“Well, don’t go to them any more.”
“Doctor, doctor, I feel like a pack of cards.”
“I’ll deal with you later!”
“Doctor, doctor, I feel like a spoon.”
“OK. Sit down there and don’t stir!”
“Doctor, doctor, I feel terrible.”
“What are the symptons?”
“A cartoon with yellow people in it!”
For Infinity and Hanny:
“Doctor, doctor, I keep seeing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and Cinderella all over the place.”
“I see, and how long have you been having these Disney spells?”
To take the biscuit:
“Doctor, doctor, I keep thinking I’m a packet of savoury biscuits!”
“Oh, no. You’re crackers!”
And finally . . .
“Doctor, doctor, I think I might need glasses.”
“You certainly do. This is a garage.”
How about the blind/blind man joke?
No eyedea.
For Alice: a spectacularly bad doctor joke.
“Doctor, doctor, there’s an invisible man in the waiting room.”
“Tell him I can’t see him.”
The daily e-mail from BBC2’s Newsnight, carry jokes ‘fit for eleven year olds’.
I was not going to create a temporary forum as I didn’t want confusion over continuity and what posts would be retained. But clearly there’s a need to have somewhere to put the kettle over the weekend! Link will be added to the downtime message on the forum URL.
Just in case you don’t know, one way to overcome withdrawal symptoms, is to go directly to SDSS and use the Navigate option in DR6.
http://cas.sdss.org/astro/en/tools/explore/
You move around (using N, E, S & W), select objects & recenter them, and if you need the ObjId, right-click the “Explore” button on the right-hand side, then copy/paste and store ready for the Forums’ return.
Another alternative is to use Sky-Map (in SDSS mode); it’s easier to navigate (press/pull)and dec & ra can be obtained
in hours/min/sec & degrees/min/sec. These values can be inserted directly into the DR6 search boxes, which automatically convert to decimal degrees.
(eg 11:59:13 converts to 179.8043)
http://www.sky-map.org/?ra=11.5418&de=47.1032&zoom=9&img_source=SDSS
Cheers – FB
Hi everybody !
So there is still life in the black, empty and cold Universe ??.. 🙂
I appreciate the “doctor’s jokes” when I understand them… I’ll try to send some news doctor’s jokes I know. Like : “(by phone) – Doctor, Doctor ! I have been knifed ! – Oh my God ! Where ? – In Seaside Avenue..”
Glad to be here…
AlexandredOr.
Hi folks! Well you know my luck when machines come into it; I can’t get onto the forum. If anyone knows how to contact my Internet company to complain that the DNS server is out of date (I think that was what Edd said, but I’m probably wrong), do tell me! The files I need to create to get on do not exist on my brand new computer! 😮
In the meantime I am dying of loneliness and jealousy of you all, so if you have any spare tea going, do please drop me an e-mail or add me to your msn contacts list to catch up! Miss you lots, and have nearly 2 pages of galaxies ready to search for on the forum when it comes back up again.
In March, one of my ISPs was bought out by another company, who put all my data (at a cut-off point) on to their new ISP, but didn’t tell me. So, all my ‘customers’ were viewing data up to this cut-off point (early March) and I was puttimg data on to the old Server (end of March) – never the twain met. It took me a few days to work out what was going on.
Well hello boys!!
…and girls too
(not to overlook Infinity 😉 )
It’s good to figure out how to find you all.
Looking forward now to Sunday or later when normal service can resume.
Stay cool and merge away…
Alice, if it really is a DNS problem. (I’m sure Edd has found ways to find this out for you), the really desperate could try the following:
* Locate a file called “hosts” on your pc. A likely spot would be “C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts”
* try to open it, and then select “notepad” from the list of applications that’s presented to you as a result, then press the “OK” button.
* In the opened file, go to the last line, and add a new one. Insert “148.197,8,7 http://www.galaxyzooforum.org” there.
* save.
* Can you visit the tempforum now?
Aargh major typo… no comma’s there, the line would have to read:
148.197.8.7 http://www.galaxyzooforum.org
Thanks very much for those messages Pluk. I’m on now. Hope nobody else had to suffer such a delay. It’s a lovely little temporary forum! Hope to see you there!
I am having trouble getting on. I have had it send me activation emails, but none are getting through, and my filter isnt even on. Can anyone help with this?
